Commercially made Continental Onion Flans are often made with a savoury custard pie filling such as this. Flan tins are lined with savoury pastry, filled with fried sliced onions and chopped fried bacon, or cheese, onions and tomato, or onions with any other meats or vegetables of your choice. Savoury custard is then poured over the filling and the flans are baked at 425F / 220C / Gas Mark 7 until nicely cooked out.
