This Irish brown soda bread without buttermilk recipe comes from my second book Dreams and Recipes 1904 – 1914. It’s a really useful recipe if you can’t source buttermilk wherever you may be in the world, or are simply needing to use up leftover milk.
This wholemeal soda bread recipe does take a bit of time – the milk ferments a little for an hour with the flour. I’m really rather fond of this recipe for wheaten bread, and love it with homemade jam or cheese and pickles.
I hope you find it a rather nifty recipe – let me know how you get on in the comments below. If you can spare a minute I’d love to hear from you.
